When it comes to inspired character crossovers, this one’s hard to top: Ryu has left his Street Fighter stomping grounds behind him to forge a new bond with the Power Rangers, starring in a new mini-film that punches far above its weight, since it’s essentially a glorified commercial for a cell phone game.
But what a glorious commercial it is. Ryu and Chun-Li are warped beyond the familiarity of their Street Fighter haunts when they stumble on a meet cute with original Green Ranger Tommy Oliver, who realizes quickly enough that the duo could really, really help his cause in the fight against baddies M. Bison and space witch Rita Repulsa.
So, he and Gia Moran from Megaforce give Ryu a suit (Chun-Li, inexplicably, is stuck with her Street Fighter raiment), say a lot of urgent-sounding things about what could happen to the Morphin Grid, and go to work. This sweet, seven-minute mini-movie is the result:
The short film is aimed at generating excitement for the Street Fighter character crossover packed in with the 2017 mobile game Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, a side-scrolling beat-‘em-up featuring a robust lineup of Power Rangers from across the franchise’s history.
A full roster of Street Fighter heroes was added to the game earlier this year, but Ryu Ranger (yes, that’s his morphed-up name) alone got the official Power Ranger treatment. See that red "bandana" around his helmet? Nice touch. With any luck, it's just a matter of time before Chun-Li gets her turn, too.
Developed by nWay Games in partnership with Lionsgate Games, Power Rangers: Legacy Wars is available for both Android and iOS devices.
