Movie studios have been trying to get a live-action version of the anime classic Akira made for years, but it apparently took a group of hardcore fans to finally crack it.
This lengthy spec trailer for a fan-made Akira movie was produced by a group calling itself The Akira Project, which was born from a passion project and supported by a successful round of crowdfunding. By the end, the project included more than 40 artists across a dozen countries.
It shot in 2012 and has spent more than a year in post-production for effects work, etc. For a fan trailer, it’s extremely good — though the budget limitations do shine through around the seams. But the passion for the source material definitely comes through.
