Stuff We Love: Rolling for initiative with these metal dwarven dice

While playing Dungeons & Dragons over the past year I’ve developed a bit of a connection to my dice. I have a favorite set I always roll first and will only set a die aside from it to use different ones if one starts giving me bad rolls like dreaded natural 1s. I know I’m not alone in having such a habit! So, what are my treasured favorites? All seven are from a metal dwarven dice set by Q Workshop.

It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with these. Their metallic shine looks amazing, and I love the styling of the numbers as well as the weapons featured on all but the d20. The set was the first time I ever used metal dice. They’re heavier and as a result roll differently than the lighter dice I have. This took some getting used to, but now I prefer how these dice roll compared to my other ones. Thanks to what they’re made of, they’ll also sound quite dramatic—and loud—when rolled. I’m careful about where I roll them just in case they can mark anything, but I’ve had no issues using them at my table so far.

They’re also extremely well suited to my character, which probably won’t come as a surprise once I tell you I play a dwarven fighter who often uses a battleaxe! The dice actually help me get into the battles and roleplaying of my game a bit more. It might sound weird depending on how you connect to your own characters in tabletop games, but the dwarven style of the dice really does make at least a small difference for me in adding to the fun of playing my fighter and feeling transported to that world.

Who knows if another set or some other dice might come along someday and replace one or all of these as my go-to options for rolls? Only time will tell. Until then though, I’ll be rolling these metal dice hoping for all the natural 20s they can give me!
