Even after all these years, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is still often referred to as the best Star Wars video game. It had everything, from great characters to fun gameplay to, perhaps most importantly, an unforgettable story impacted by your decisions. The role-playing game casts you as a customizable character who can choose between the light and the dark side as you try to save the galaxy. All of this made for a great game, but what really put Knights of the Old Republic over the top was a moment that revealed something about your character that changed everything!
Spoilers for Knights of the Old Republic follow!
That moment comes when you encounter Darth Malak during your journey to find the Star Forge and stop the Sith. Malak seems to know you and talks about “what you once were” before there’s a bunch of flashbacks. Then, at the end, it’s shown that when Darth Revan removes their mask it’s you! I can still remember being completely blown away when the mask was taken off and it was my character’s face underneath it. She couldn’t be Revan! Could she?!?
It was the first time I remember being completely stunned by a video game. Suddenly Malak was back on the screen talking, but my mind was still racing. I was shocked in the best way possible, just as I imagined my character would be as the conversation continued. This realization made me look at the story, my character, and the other characters in an entirely different way.
Once the shock faded, I was thrilled! I was excited for what this meant for my character and the game. It was handled masterfully, and the moment happened at just the perfect time. This reveal impacted my future conversations and choices in the game. It added so much depth to the story and helped strengthen the role-play aspect by really making it an emotional revelation that you felt as a player and couldn’t help but channel into your character.
I’ve played a lot of video games since this one. Many of them have also had emotional moments and unexpected surprises. This moment in Knights of the Old Republic, though, will always be one of my favorites.
