The Oscars didn't feature a whole lot for genre fans (except for that Shyamalan-like twist at the end), though there were a few major sci-fi projects that scored some wins.

Without further ado, the relevant winners for sci-fi fans: Zootopia won Animated Feature Film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them won Costume Design, Suicide Squad won Makeup and Hairstyling, Arrival won Sound Editing, and The Jungle Book won Visual Effects … and that was pretty much it.

In other major categories, Moonlight won Best Picture (eventually) and Casey Affleck won Actor in a Leading Role for Manchester by the Sea, while Emma Stone won Actress in a Leading Role for La La Land. Hacksaw Ridge won Film Editing, Damien Chazelle won Directing for La La Land, Viola Davis won Actress in a Supporting Role for Fences, and Mahershala Ali won Actor in a Supporting Role for Moonlight.

The big takeaway: Suicide Squad is now an Oscar winner. Welcome to the darkest timeline, y’all.
