Watch the terrifying teaser for this horror import if you dare.
Goodnight Mommy started making the festival rounds last year and is now coming out in limited release next month. Directed by Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the movie follows two young twin brothers who begin to doubt whether the woman who has returned to their isolated home -- following reconstructive surgery that has left her face entirely bandaged -- is actually their mother.
The trailer captures an eerie vibe right from the start and only gets more disturbing from there, incorporating imagery that includes insects, an ominous forest and some primal-looking masks right out of the British horror gem The Kill List. The Playlist reviewed this sucker out of the 2014 Venice Film Festival, calling it a "resonant, atmospheric horror film" with a "brilliantly uncompromised finale," just in case the trailer doesn't seal the deal for you.
It certainly looks like Goodnight Mommy will continue the string of excellent horror outings that have been trickling out since late last year, including The Babadook, It Follows and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Watch the trailer below and tell us if you think this is a genre classic in the making.
