Super-teen flick Chronicle could crush those bad Heroes memories

It seems like Hollywood will keep trying to do superpowered teenagers until it gets them right. Heroes fizzled, I Am Number Four was more like Number 2—so now Chronicle steps up to bat. Can its brand of verite verve make it a hit?

I'm not sure if the whole "found footage" conceit will add some verisimilitude to Chronicle, written by Max Landis (son of John) and directed by Josh Trank, or if it'll just be a handheld annoyance that quickly wears out its welcome—yes, Cloverfield, we're looking at you. But this first trailer does look promising.

What I like is the sense of scale: The small, intimate moments on a tiny scale juxtaposed with vast, almost Akira-like displays of raw power.

Here's the plot, according to Chronicle's Facebook page:

Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities, and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over.

I am officially curious. Chronicle opens on Feb. 3, 2012.
