The CW’s Supergirl and UFO series Blue Book have added two new cast members, while Jon Hamm and a 13 Reasons Why star will have to face supernatural forces in two separate genre-related movie projects.
TV Line reports Supergirl will have a mother-and-son reunion when Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne, The Big Bang Theory) comes to National City in a guest-starring stint where she will play Winn's (Jeremy Jordan) estranged mom. Winn’s dad, the villainous Toyman (Henry Czerny), was seen in the Season 1 episode "Childish Things."
The casting news literally flew under the radar when it was mentioned in passing in a Vanity Fair article where Metcalf said she took the part so that her youngest kid could meet her idol, Melissa Benoist. Metcalf will appear in Episode 15, slated to air sometime in 2018.
According to Deadline, History’s Robert Zemeckis-produced UFO drama series Blue Book has cast Laura Mennell (Watchmen, The Man in the High Castle) as the female lead opposite Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones). The 10-episode series was created and written on spec by David O’Leary. Sean Jablonski will act as showrunner and Maleficent director Robert Stromberg will helm the first two episodes.
Blue Book follows the real-life “top secret U.S. Air Force-sponsored investigations into UFO-related phenomena in the 1950s and ’60s." Gillen will play Dr. J. Allen Hynek who juggled life as a family man, brilliant astrophysicist and UFO skeptic brought on board the project as the Chief Scientific Advisor. Mennell will play his wife, Mimi Hynek, a “seemingly content stay-at-home housewife” with “plans to become much more.”
Deadline reports Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Good Omens) has been tapped to star in a supernatural thriller titled Off Season. The movie is currently in pre-production with an eye to film in Canada in early 2018. It's being written and directed by Jonathan van Tulleken (his first feature film) based on his BAFTA-nominated short of the same title.
Off Season will see Hamm play a man searching for his missing elderly father after he vanishes mysteriously. The movie will be set in the harsh Canadian frozen tundra where the son’s “feverish search” unearths long buried, shocking family secrets along the way.
According to Variety, Netflix has nabbed the worldwide rights to a supernatural thriller titled The Open House starring Dylan Minnette (Goosebumps, 13 Reasons Why, Don’t Breathe). Written and directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, The Open House centers on teenager Logan Wallace (Minnette) and his mom (Piercey Dalton, Fruitcake) who “find themselves besieged by threatening forces when they move into a new house.”
The Open House will premiere on Netflix on Jan. 19, 2018. Are you excited we'll get to meet Winn's mom in Laurie Metcalf?
