Supergirl just name-dropped another Legion of Super-Heroes team member

Last night’s episode of Supergirl gave us a proper introduction to the Arrowverse version of the Legion of Super-Heroes as well as introducing us to Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath), or “Brainy” as he is called by his fellow teammates. But the show also name dropped another Legion member: Ayla Ranzz, aka Lightning Lass.

The reveal was made about 18 minutes into the episode as Mon-El (Chris Wood) explains that “A thousand years from now, this farming planet Winath goes dark, and our friend Ayla; she’s from there. So she goes to check it out.” We’re told Winath was a paradise found decimated and completely dried out by some creatures called the Blight, said to consume everything in their path, when Ayla returned to her home planet. So far, so very ominous for the fate of the universe.

“Brainy found a way to stop them, but they were on us before we could use it,” Mon-El added. And so they hid the information into their DNA so it cannot be lost or stolen. Since said precious info is written in their genes, if they die, their DNA can’t make it a thousand years into the future and apparently, all will be lost. Which explains Mon-El’s reluctance for the Legionnaires to fight the show's Season 3 Big Bad, Reign (Odette Annable).

Created by writer Edmond Hamilton and artist John Forte for the pages of Adventure Comics #308 (1963), Ayla Ranzz, aka Lightning Lass, was indeed born on Winath. She was the twin sister of Garth Ranzz, aka Lightning Lad, one of the founding members of the Legion of Super-Heroes alongside Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl (in the comics, Garth Ranzz and Imra Ardeen had a romantic relationship).

Ayla and Garth were the younger siblings of DC supervillain Mekt, known as Lightning Lord and all three gained their electrical superpowers when they were attacked by lightning beasts on Korbal.

When Lightning Lad died, his sister Ayla disguised herself as her brother, claiming he was back from the dead after apparently being killed by Zaryan the Conqueror. It wasn’t long before her ruse was discovered but she was still made a Legion member as Lightning Lass.

The fact that Ayla Ranzz was mentioned on the show could indicate she’s one of the other two Legion team members still sleeping in the pods (three of the five are now out) — although the fact she was name dropped is no official confirmation that she’ll indeed appear on the show. The other members who could potentially still be on the ship include Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see which two other Legionnaires will ultimately be revealed on Supergirl. What do you think? Would you like to see Lightning Lass appear on the CW series?
