Fans of Kal-El and his many villains may recognize this bad guy -- or at least his name -- when he shows up during Supergirl's premiere season.
According to The Wrap, Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed on Monday at the show's TCA panel that Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) will encounter Non, the Kryptonian villain most familiar to fans from 1978's Superman and 1981's Superman II. Non was played in those films by Jack O'Halloran as mute muscle for General Zod (Terence Stamp) and his henchwoman Ursa (Sarah Douglas).
Non, however, also turned up in Superman comics eventually, introduced in Action Comics #845 (January 2007) by Geoff Johns, Adam Kubert and Richard Donner (who directed the first Superman and parts of Superman II). In that storyline, Non was a colleague and friend of Superman's father, Jor-El, and was lobotomized and turned into the non-verbal rage machine we know from the movies by Krypton's Science Council after he started a separatist movement.
Kreisberg said that the show's version of Non will be closer to the comics, explaining, "Like in the comic books, the Non that you saw in Superman II had been lobotomized, and when we meet him he won’t have been lobotomized yet."
Whether the appearance of Non also opens the door for Zod himself to show up is not known at this time. but showrunner Greg Berlanti said on the panel that those early films starring Christopher Reeve are an important influence on Supergirl: "(They) had a charm, a believability, and an epicness, and if you go back and watch them again -- if you remove the action set pieces, just the sort of sweeping vistas and the size and the scope of it. It had something that just imprinted on our brains, and I associated that with what it meant to tell a story.”
I was turned off by the first Supergirl trailer -- which emphasized the worst sub-CW aspects of the show -- but much more impressed by the second, which highlighted some formidable superhero action and thrills. Which show Supergirl turns out to be -- and how Non and other possible Superman villains fit into it -- remains to be seen, but we'll find out when the series premieres on CBS on Oct. 27 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
What do you make of Non coming onto the show? What other villains would you like to see?
