Now in its eighth season, The CW’s Supernatural has dipped into about every sci-fi and fantasy trope that exists. But it's arguably had the most fun with time travel, and it's going to that well once again for a generation-hopping Winchester family reunion.

On tonight’s episode, “As Time Goes By,” the brothers’ grandfather, Henry Winchester (Gil McKinney), travels from 1958 to 2013 to meet up with the monster-hunting siblings. As we’ve seen a few times before, time travel rarely works out too well for the Winchester family. From hunting demons in the Prohibition era to traipsing through the Wild West, it always gets complicated.

Producer Robert Singer says this new storyline was ripe for exploration, as the series has never delved too deeply into the extended family on the Winchester side. The boys have already met their other monster-hunting grandpa, and Singer says the classic Winchester abandonment issues make the introduction of Henry an intriguing story to tell. All the boys really know about him is that he left their dad high and dry at a young age, and it seems Dean still holds a grudge.

Singer told Entertainment Weekly:

“We make this stuff up as we go along, but we try to use what we’ve done before [with the family] and spin out from there and tell interesting stories and get into back story like this.

Dean had a probably more complicated relationship than Sam did with [their father] John. Dean was always in defense of Dad, and John made the ultimate sacrifice for Dean, so I think he takes this stuff a little more personally than Sam does.”

The episode airs tonight on The CW. Are you looking forward to learning more about the WInchester family tree?
