Suicide Squad is a true litmus test on the current state of superhero films and whether fans are starting to suffer from the inevitable fatigue. Its achievements in the late summer box office may steer studios' decisions going into the next phase of Hollywood's affection for capes and cowls.

Still two months out, we still have no specific plot details to dissect in David Ayer's comic book "Dirty Dozen." Stranger things have happened, but could it be possible that audiences might be pleasantly surprised by clever story elements when it mauls multiplexes, instead of being pummeled into insignificance by watered-down marketing weeks before it ever opens?

It never hurts to dream!

Slingshot your retinas into this new crop of photos from Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad, with revealing pics of The Joker, Killer Croc, Katana, Deadshot, Harley Quinn and more. These photos come from the August issue of Total Film magazine and feature the motley crew of crazy crusading criminals known as Task Force X.  This upcoming edition also includes interviews with key cast members and producer Charles Roven, who explains exactly who the villainous camo-clad commandos are seen in the trailers battling Amanda Waller's "Worst of the Worst."

According to director Ayer and Roven, they're a maniacal military force called The Eyes of the Adversary.

“Let’s just say, when they’re called in to do this mission by Amanda [Waller], these are one of the things they encounter,” Roven said.. “They don’t know how they got here, but they’re weird and dangerous and yet they’re wearing military uniforms.”

Suicide Squad strikes theaters on Aug. 5, 2016, and stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne.

Have a peek at these new shots and tell us if you've still got Suicide Squad centered in your crosshairs.
