Guess who's back? After being noticeably absent from X-Men: Days of Future Past, a character from X-Men: First Class is returning to the franchise. It's not another mutant, but a human ally who changed Charles Xavier's life forever.
Actress Rose Byrne will reprise her role as Moira MacTaggert in next year's X-Men: Apocalypse. In First Class, the character was a CIA agent who aided Xavier and Magneto in their fight against Sebastian Shaw. She was also a love interest whose relationship with Xavier was short-lived.
At the end of First Class, two major events happened. Moira and Magneto accidentally caused Xavier's paralysis, and Xavier wiped her memories of the incident and the X-Men as a whole. Despite that, screenwriter Simon Kinberg says there's more to her story.
“She’s a significant character in the movie,” he said. "It’s certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class and would like to mine more in this one.” Apocalypse will serve as a full-circle moment in the X-Men series. So it makes sense for MacTaggert to be back in the fold.
“This movie is the completion of the first arcs of Charles, Eric, Raven and Hank, who are essentially our main characters,” Kinberg explained. “They’re such young actors and young characters, so there’s a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie.”
Are you excited to see MacTaggert back?
X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters May 27, 2016.
