The second season of Marvel's Luke Cage dropped today on Netflix, and there has already been a lot of chatter about how it's better than the first season, with rave reviews for Alfre Woodard's Mariah Dillard and a new villain, Bushmaster, played by Mustafa Shakir. Cage has come a long way from his humble beginnings as a Hero for Hire to starring in his own television series, but there have been plenty of comics that have laid the groundwork that made him a Grade A character and worthy of the bigger stage.
After bingeing on Netflix, you might find yourself jonesing for more Luke Cage. Luckily, there's plenty of stories to choose from. Even looking at the last 15 years, there has been a boost in Cage's development and a number of creators wanting to put their stamp on the hard-hitting Harlemite.
As such, SYFY WIRE has come up with 7 Essential Luke Cage Stories, spanning his time as a mercenary born in the blaxploitation genre to family man to the Avengers and to becoming a leader of the Thunderbolts.
There is a wealth of stories to choose from, but we came to our list by zeroing in on specific knuckle-bustin' stories, cherry-picked from Cage's library of progression. Now, fans may differ and debate the specific single issues that are the best, but our list serves largely as the key points in Cage's career as a crime fighter, which readers can use as launch points to explore specific aspects of the character.
