In the world of Marvel's Luke Cage, the enmity between Simone Missick's Misty Knight and Alfre Woodard's Mariah Dillard gets even more intense during the recently released second season on Netflix. But once the cameras stop rolling, Missick and Woodard have a very different relationship. During SYFY WIRE's extended interview with Missick, she shared the story of her birthday on the set of Luke Cage, including her recreation of Woodard singing 50 Cent to celebrate the occasion. Missick also offered some very effusive praise for her veteran co-star.
**Spoiler Warning: There are spoilers for Luke Cage Season 2 below, and in the video interview.**
During The Defenders, Misty's right arm was severed and her life was immediately changed. Missick told us how that transformed her perspective on Misty as well, since the outward sign of her character’s vulnerability affected the way Misty felt and the way she was treated by her fellow cops. Part of this season's arc is about Misty reclaiming her power even before she gets her bionic arm. But it was a hard journey back for both Missick and the character she portrays.
"The same people who look at you every day now question your ability, your strength, your capabilities as a police officer, as a human being," related Missick. "It is heartbreaking, and I can only play at that screen, but I think you can't imagine what people who have those physical disabilities or their capabilities challenged, what they go through every day... Misty has people who question whether she can do her job anymore because she's lost her arm and it's having to fight against your own self-doubt because even she questions it within herself. 'Am I really able and ready? Can I do what need to do?' But she manages to find her way, which I think is important."
