Kelly Overton (True Blood) has been cast as the lead in Syfy’s new upcoming supernatural series Van Helsing.

Deadline reports the actress will play a female descendent of famed Dracula literary character Van Helsing named Vanessa Helsing in the 13-episode series from acclaimed filmmaker Neil LaBute. LaBute will also serve as producer/showrunner alongside Continuum creator Simon Barry (who will also sit in the director's chair) as producer.

Kelly Overton (who played werewolf female alpha Rikki Naylor on the HBO series) will be joined by Jonathan Scarfe (Hell on Wheels), Christopher Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels), Paul Johansson (Mad Men), David Cubitt (Ray Donovan) and Tim Guinee (Stargate SG-1, Homeland). LaBute said, “We’ve been extremely blessed to get such a wonderfully talented and diverse cast for Van Helsing. Kelly will be an amazing Vanessa, and our lead cast is nothing short of outstanding.”

Van Helsing will put a new interesting twist on the Dracula story with Vanessa being resurrected in a future where vampires rule the world. The last in a long line of famed monster hunters, she discovers that she holds a mysterious power over the vampires and that must lead what’s left of humankind against the bloodsuckers in a post-Rising world.

Here are the first character descriptions:

Scarfe plays Axel, a career Marine with unwavering devotion and loyalty to both duty and his wards, despite years of isolation and endless vampire attacks.

Heyerdahl will play Sam, a survivor of the vampire Rising, who relies on his strength and observational skills to stay alive.

Johansson will play Dimitri, a vampire turned before the Rising, he is now the patient and calculating leader of the vampires.

Cubitt will play John, another survivor of the vampire Rising, whose actions are fueled by anger, prejudice, suspicion and fear.

Guinee will play Ted, a vampire foot soldier who does battle with Vanessa and conceals a tragic past.

Production on Van Helsing will kick off Feb. 22 in Vancouver, with Michael Nankin (Hell on Wheels), Jason Priestley (Haven), David Frazee (Orphan Black), Simon Barry (Continuum) and Amanda Tapping (The Magicians) on directing duties for various episodes.

What do you think of the casting of Kelly Overton as Vanessa Helsing? Are you excited about the rest of the supporting cast? Van Helsing will premiere on Syfy this coming fall.
