The dragons are back! In what's being billed as the final chapter in the How to Train Your Dragon series, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World looks to up the stakes, in terms of both action and emotion.
While fans at NYCC a few weeks ago were able to get a first look at the new footage, DreamWorks Animation has made good on its promise and released the new trailer online Thursday:
When the first film was released in 2010, few could foresee the heights to which the franchise, loosely adapted from Cressida Cowell's children's book series of the same name, would fly. But it became clear from that first film and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) that this franchise is something special, and appealed to more than children.
The new trailer gives us more of the mysterious Light Fury, as well as F. Murray Abraham's villain Grimmel, who promises to destroy everything Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) loves. The trailer also gives us a brief glimpse at the return of Hiccup's mother, Valka, who will be reprised by Cate Blanchett. While there's sure to be plenty of fun in store, the series so far hasn't entirely left out the tragedy that makes for any grand epic, and it looks like there may be a few fallen heroes and tears shed by the end of this journey. If The Hidden World sticks the landing as strongly as the trailer suggests it will, then expect the trilogy to be able to stand among the likes of Toy Story as one of the all-time great animated film series.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will be released on Feb. 22, 2019.
