Today, Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in Drama Series, and it only took three years and countless other honors to get her there. Telelvision critics and fans alike have been calling for an Emmy nod for Maslany ever since Orphan Black debuted, so her nomination was pretty much the biggest genre news of this morning's announcements. It wasn't the only genre news to be had, though.
In fact, genre shows dominated many of the nominations this year. Game of Thrones had the most of any show, with 24, while American Horror Story: Freak Show came in second with 19, including three in a single acting category. Among the biggest nominations for Thrones were Outstanding Drama Series, an Oustanding Supporting Actor nod for Peter Dinklage, Outstanding Supporting Actress nods for both Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey, and an Outstanding Guest Actress nod for the always delightful Diana Rigg. So far, the only actor to take home an Emmy for the show is Dinklage, but perhaps this year will change that, particularly in light of Headey's emotional Season 5 arc.
American Horror Story has won at least one acting award in each of its past three seasons, including two for Jessica Lange, and this year the show will have a shot at even more. Lange was once again nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, while both Denis O'Hare and Finn Wittrick both received nods for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, and Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates were all honored with Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie nominations. The show itself earned its fourth straight nomination for Outstanding Limited Series (previously called Outstanding Miniseries).
Elsewhere in genre nominations, Will Forte earned an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for The Last Man on Earth, and HBO's tech comedy Silicon Valley (not technically genre, but still great) was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for the second straight year.
