While Doctor Who won't have a Christmas special this year, Jodie Whittaker's Time Lord won't be left out in the cold. Instead, the sci-fi/fantasy series will enjoy a TV event on New Year's day with an episode aptly titled "Resolution."
Today, a very short teaser for the special was released online. There's not much action, but Whittaker's character speaks a warning about "the DNA of the most dangerous creature in the universe."
As the end of the teaser reveals, this is a reference to the Daleks, the iconic, robot-like antagonists that date back to the original series of the 1960s, known for yelling one four-syllable word that signals the doom of other species: "EX-TER-MI-NATE!"
Check out the teaser:
Whittaker's predecessor, Peter Capaldi, encountered the villains in his second episode as The Doctor, "Into the Dalek" (2014). According to the Sunday Express, this was the shortest time before a Doctor faced off against Daleks. Conversely, David Tennant had to wait 12 episodes, the longest time for any one Doctor, until they appeared.
Written by showrunner Chris Chibnall and directed by Preacher and Happy! alum Wayne Yip, "Resolution" debuts on the BBC January 1.
