Yes, we’ve told you about The Shape of Water’s fishman-inspired sex toy before. In fact, director Guillermo del Toro and star Doug Jones know about it, too. But, thanks to the Oscars — where the film won top awards Sunday, including Best Picture — we now know that even more people found out about the toys, people who matter the most to its makers: customers.
According to The Wrap, XenoCat Artifacts — the company behind the unlicensed erotic memorabilia inspired by The Shape of Water — put 28 more units up for sale the day before the Oscars, and in 20 minutes, they were gone. They may be sold out for a while: When asked if demand had grown since the film’s strong showing this Oscar season, the product's creator, Ere, replied, “A pretty good amount!”
Ere isn’t ungrateful to her muses, either. She apparently would like to thank del Toro and Jones for their inspiration with a gift. But not that. Just “a coaster set and maybe a teeny gold replica,” the sex-toy manufacturer explained. Of course one of the year’s most buzzed-about and downright strange films deserves to have all those mementos on its awards shelf, right next to its shiny new Oscar statuettes.
