More than two years ago we were excited/terrified at the possibility of Warner Bros. trotting out the Masters of the Universe series for another movie. We'd forgotten all about it—until right now, that is. Get ready to be excited/terrified all over again, because He-Man is on target for a film release.
The word from vice president of Sony DeVon Franklin is that the movie is back on track and that a script will be submitted soon. According to Franklin, "One of other things I'm really excited about is we're doing a reboot of the 1980s franchise Masters of the Universe. The He-Man franchise. Very excited about that. Should have that script very soon. I'm praying that we can start figuring out how we're going to make it."
Might we make a request? Try being in on the joke. Masters of the Universe, as stories go, is not the most rich or complex narrative and to say that it was a little campy is to enter oneself for the understatement of the century award. The temptation might be to play it totally straight, do something akin to Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, but we think a more light-hearted approach might serve the story better. Seriously, He-Man rides a big green cat and wears a loincloth—the jokes write themselves. Why let critics beat you to it when you can just let the humor come built-in?
That's just what we think. How about you, gentle reader? Should Prince Adam keep rocking the pink outfits, or is it time to trade them in for an edgier, more serious He-Man?
