For 10 years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe garnered a plethora of reactions from all different types of fans. For some, it was the happiness of realizing all their favorite childhood comics had come to life. For others, it was a reason the entire family would go to the movies together (even the teenagers). Most recently with Black Panther, they gave another set of fans the representation they never felt before with superhero movies.
Regardless of the different feelings these movies create, there is one that all fans can do together: Laugh.
Yes, Marvel movies are about good defeating evil and stopping the world from possibly ending, but there is nothing in the rulebook that says you can't have fun at the same time. Throughout the years, these movies have made us laugh as an audience to the point where you must see the movies again and again to catch the lines you missed because of the audience roaring.
We've looked at ten of the funniest moments of the MCU and put them here for you to laugh at again. (Disclaimer: We left out Avengers: Infinity War, which boasts some truly incredible one-liners, just in case you haven't seen it yet).
"He's adopted." - Thor, The Avengers (2012)
The Avengers have finally assembled (someone REALLY needs to yell that at some point in these films) and are discussing how dangerous Loki is. Throughout the years, it’s obvious how much Thor loves his brother, but he sure isn’t going to take responsibility for him.
"We're connected." - Harley Keener, Iron Man Three (2013)
Before Tony Stark found a protege in Peter Parker, Harley Keener took on the role of Tony's "kid sidekick." The difference is, Harley didn't revere Tony like Peter and went toe-to-toe with him when it came to being a smartass. Their final exchange showed that Tony both saw Harley as an equal, but at the same time wasn't going to put up with his crap, either.
"This place would look like a Jackson Pollock painting." - Peter Quill, Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Probably the most irreverent line of any MCU movie, and that's what makes it one of the funniest. Parts of the audience found it hilarious, while others probably had no idea what was going on. Don't worry, kids, you'll understand when your parents (or health class) are ready to talk to you about it.
Thor's entire snake story - Thor, Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok makes this list hard to compile, since the movie itself is a laugh fest from start to finish. If we had to highlight one specific part, it's when Thor tells the story of Loki pretending to be a snake and the hilarity that ensued (for Loki, anyway). From the "BLEH! It's me!!" to Bruce Banner’s "No…" when he knows what's coming, this is another example of Taika Waititi's delightful brand of filmmaking.
"Language!" - Steve Rogers (and co.), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Some of the best jokes are the ones that can last throughout an entire film and not seem contrived or forced. Cap yelling "language" at Tony like he's his father would have been great by itself at the beginning of Age of Ultron. The fact that they were able to intertwine it during the rest of the movie made the landing stick.
"Thinks for thanking of me." - Scott Lang, Captain America: Civil War (2016)
In one of the more serious Marvel movies, Civil War, who better to bring a bit of levity than Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man? His nervousness about the entire situation is adorable and was a great palette cleanser for what was to come.
"Patience." - Steve Rogers, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Ah, the Marvel post-credits scene. Sometimes they are used to set up where the MCU is headed. Other times they act as a funny coda to what you just saw. Spider-Man: Homecoming is the latter. This one is particularly great because the audiences are laughing so hard that they don't care they are blatantly being teased.
"What are thoooose?" - Shuri, Black Panther (2018)
You can't argue that Shuri was the breakout character of Black Panther (wait. Okoye, M'Baku, Nakia, Killmonger… you know what, we'll table that for later. She rules. That much we know). She has no misgivings about talking to her brother like a sibling, not a king. This is apparent when he dares to wear open-toed sandals into her lab.
"That man is playing Galaga." - Tony Stark, The Avengers (2012)
Some of the best humor comes out of nowhere. Tony Stark's first appearance on the helicarrier proves this. Not only does he own the room like he is wanton to do but also calls out a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent for playing video games when they should be trying to save the world. We wonder how he had an Atari controller hooked up to his monitor with no one noticing. No wonder Tony was able to hack into their system so easily.
"He's a friend from work!" - Thor, Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
When the first trailer for Ragnarok premiered, we didn't know what we were getting. What type of Thor movie was Taika Waititi going to give us? Well, when Thor first laid eyes on the Incredible Hulk in the Grandmaster's arena, the smile on his face told us everything we needed. What we got was one of not just a hilarious Marvel movie, but a hilarious movie regardless of genre.
