The Christmas Chronicles: Latest trailer for Netflix holiday comedy debunks a few Santa-related myths

Let's get a few things straight: 1) Santa Claus doesn't actually go "Ho! Ho! Ho!", and 2) he's not the obese dude you see on the side of Coca-Cola products. At least that's reality in Netflix's upcoming holiday comedy, The Christmas Chronicles, which stars Kurt Russell (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) as a demythologized version of jolly ol' St. Nick.

“Kurt is the definitive Santa Claus," said producer Chris Columbus in an official statement. "Charismatic, tough when needed with a wicked sense of humor. We’re really excited for audiences to see his performance onscreen and hope The Christmas Chronicles becomes a timeless classic.”

Today, the streaming giant released the latest trailer for the film, which wastes no time in reminding us that it's from the people behind the first Harry Potter and Home Alone movies. Even so, it does look like an old-school fantasy/holiday adventure in the vein of The Santa Clause, Jack FrostElf, and Miracle on 34th Street.

Watch the trailer below and try not to smile:

The Christmas Chronicles follows the brother-and-sister duo of Kate and Teddy Pierce (Darby Camp and Judah Lewis), who stumble upon the fact that Santa is, indeed, real. In doing so, however, they cause his sleigh to crash, placing all of Christmas in jeopardy. During one wild night, they'll help the bearded gift-deliverer complete his global route, encouraging folks to be good to each other.

While the film does aspire to subvert a few Santa tropes (even his elves are cute little CGI creations rather than real humans in costume and forced perspective), it does have the cliched plot device of the magical gizmo that gauges holiday spirit around the world. Still, Russell brings his natural charisma and wit to the role that we have yet to see in an onscreen Santa.

"No one is better suited than Kurt Russell to bring our version of a rugged, charismatic, and hilarious Santa Claus to life," said director Clay Kaytis (The Angry Birds Movie). "From our first meeting, he completely threw himself into this iconic role — and grew an impressive beard in the process. It has been a dream come true to work with Kurt in creating what I believe will be the new definition of Santa Claus for generations to come."

The Christmas Chronicles sleds onto Netflix Nov. 22.
