The Cured trailer sees a former zombie who's seen too much

After Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Maggie and other modern zombie films imagined a rehabilitating, post-zombie world, The Cured follows in its lurching footsteps. This horror is a zombie-plagued world on the advent of a cure to its cannibalistic disease.

The formerly infected Senan (Sam Keeley) remembers everything he did in his infected days, and it haunts his daily life with his widowed sister-in-law (Ellen Page). The grotesquerie here isn’t in the gore but in the inescapable memories of a creature that was not quite the protagonist — but wasn’t completely separate, either.

Watch it below:

Written and directed by David Freyne in his feature-film debut, this zombie film is here in direct antithesis to The Walking Dead’s purgatorial violence. It’s a world of interior violence that hopes for redemption. In posing an intriguing premise — what happens when the undead are no longer undead? — it alludes to issues like prejudice and discrimination, couched in a genre film that seeks to twist convention.

The Cured crawls into theaters and On Demand on Feb. 23.
