The town of Salem is going to hell when WGN America’s horror series returns for a highly anticipated third season just after Halloween, and a new trailer and character portraits have been unleashed to whet our appetite for more supernatural drama in everyone's favorite 17th-century town in Puritan America.

Even though she died in the Salem Season 2 finale, it's no great secret that the new season will see the return of raised-from-the-dead Mary Sibley, played by Janet Montgomery. Shane West will also return as Mary’s true love, Captain John Alden.

Also back are Seth Gabel as Cotton Mather, Ashley Madekwe as Tituba (who’s getting a pair of brand-new cat eyes: see the pics below), Tamzin Merchant as Anne Hale, Elise Eberle as Mercy Lewis, Iddo Goldberg as Isaac Walton, Joe Doyle as Baron Sebastian Marburg and Oliver Bell as Mary and John’s young son. The new season will also introduce two new characters: the town’s bloody barber surgeon Thomas Dinley (Marilyn Manson) and The Sentinel, played by Samuel Roukin (TURN: Washington’s Spies).

The third season of Salem dawns with the triumph of the witches' plan to remake the New World by bringing the devil to earth and making Salem his capital.  But the devil is a liar, and instead of a New World free from murderous Puritan hypocrisy, his own plan will bring nothing but death and slavery with the ultimate aim of leading humanity to destroy itself.  And there's only one person on earth who can beat the devil -- the very witch that birthed him, his mother, Mary Sibley.  The only problem is—she's dead.  Or is she?

Salem will return on Nov. 2 at 9 p.m. on WGN America. Check out the new trailer and character portraits below (via Far Far Away Site), and let us know what you think.

UPDATE: WGN America has released five new images from Season 3, which I've included in the gallery.
