Over 25 years ago, DC Comics killed off its most beloved icon in The Death of Superman storyline. To put the Man of Steel six feet under, DC introduced a new villain, Doomsday, who went on a nearly unstoppable rampage on his way to Metropolis. At the time, Superman was a member of the post-comedy era Justice League. As much as we love Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, and Guy Gardner, they weren’t exactly the heavy hitters of the DC Universe. Would things have played out differently if Superman had the help of Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League’s biggest heroes?
Earlier today, IGN debuted a new trailer for The Death of Superman animated movie, and it seems to suggest that nothing would have changed if the Justice League wasn’t packed with second-stringers. If anything, Doomsday seems even more dangerous as he makes short work of the world’s greatest heroes.
Longtime DC fans will recall that The Death of Superman was previously adapted as the Superman: Doomsday animated movie in 2007. While that film greatly condensed the massive storyline into a movie-length adventure, the new adaptation of The Death of Superman will be split into two films. Presumably the second film will adapt the Reign of the Superman storyline that brought the hero back to life.
Jerry O'Connell is leading the cast of this film as Superman/Clark Kent, with Rebecca Romijn as Lois Lane, Rainn Wilson as Lex Luthor, Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, and Jason O'Mara as Batman.
The Death of Superman will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on August 7.
