It’s been a decade, but the Doctor’s daughter is finally back for a series of new Big Finish audio adventures out this week. However, if it had been up to Georgia Tennant, her Doctor Who character would have returned to the Whoniverse much sooner.
Thing is… she was never asked back.
“I’ve always been aware of what Doctor Who brings to it, and what you then carry on throughout your life,” explained the actress (who happens to be the daughter of Fifth Doctor Peter Davison and the wife of Tenth Doctor David Tennant) to Radio Times. “But because it was just one episode I thought ‘Oh… that’ll just come and go.’ But it hasn’t, and everyone’s so lovely. Everyone’s wanted me to do this, and at conventions everyone’s been like, ‘Why don’t you come back and do something?’ And you know, obviously they never asked me on the TV show…”
Making her debut in the Season 4 episode “The Doctor’s Daughter,” Tennant made one single appearance as the Doctor’s “daughter” Jenny, who was a clone of the Tenth Doctor. Although the character died at the end of the episode, she regenerated thanks to that handy Time Lord DNA and blasted off into space aboard a stolen rocket in search of adventure, which led to fans expecting her to pop up at any time on the BBC series.
Jenny became a fan-favorite character, and Tennant, who was keen to reprise the role at the time, has often been asked by fans if Jenny would ever return on Doctor Who, but alas, it never materialized.
This may be explained by the fact that former showrunners Steven Moffat and Russell T Davies have often joked that Jenny died offscreen following the airing of the episode by flying straight into a moon — a joke the actress wasn’t too happy about. So she complained about it.
“Is this where I crash into a moon?” Tennant told Radio Times back in February. “Yeah, I heard about that. That’s nice, isn’t it? I sent [Steven] and Russell an email, with a link to the story, going, ‘WTF?’ To which they both wrote back slightly panicked replies, about it being sort of a joke. Clearly wasn’t a joke.”
Big Finish’s new series of audio adventures featuring Tennant as Jenny was announced in July of last year and has now finally been made available earlier this week. Check out the trailer:
About reprising the role for Jenny — The Doctor's Daughter, Tennant says she's happy to have more to talk about when going to conventions.
“You know, there’s only so many stories you can tell,” Tennant said. “It’s difficult to tell [fans] about your character when your character hasn’t existed before that point. It’s very difficult to come up with anecdotes. I just felt that I needed to give everyone a break and stop talking about it. But now I’m going to have LOADS of stuff to talk about, so they’re going to have at least another 10 years of me banging on. So that’ll be fun for everyone. She’s got much more of a personality than she had, I think, in the TV show. Because we’ve had time to sort of create that. Which is nice. And in herself, she has had time to create her own personality. She’s gone on.”
