The Flash has been a trailblazer for pushing superhero TV to its narrative brink with its alternate universes, timelines, and a cavalcade of characters. Now, after a completely twisty Season 4 finale, Season 5 promises even weirder stories featuring future daughters and plenty of Elongated Man coming fans’ way as the team unpacks all the implications of the future.
At San Diego Comic-Con today, the cast and producers gave us a sneak peek at the upcoming season before their Q&A panel, which featured stars Grant Gustin, Jesse L. Martin, Tom Cavanagh, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Hartley Sawyer, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Danielle Nicolet, alongside executive producer Todd Helbing.
The teaser footage above shows the time-displaced daughter Nora, aka XS (who might accidentally "Marty McFly herself," worries Barry), as well as a Flash Ring and a spooky lightning-bolt-shaped dagger wielded by the season's mysterious, Darth Vader-breathing big baddie: Cicada, played by Chris Klein.
Cicada will be just the second non-speedster Big Bad on the show. According to The CW's press release, "next season’s scourge of Central City" is a "grizzled, blue-collar everyman whose family has been torn apart by metahumans." And he's looking "to exterminate the epidemic — one metahuman at a time."
The panelists then confirmed that Barry will be getting a new suit via the ring, which will be the suit most influenced by the comics. All that is gonna be piled on top of Nora's clinginess to Barry and coldness to Iris (which certainly seems ominous for whatever Nora knows about the future). It was also announced that Danielle Panabaker will direct her first episode during Season 5.
The Flash returns to air on Oct. 9 on The CW.
