Now this is the podracing game we always wanted. Anakin Skywalker's podracing triumph in the Boonta Eve Classic was certainly a highlight of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and it has spawned several racing games over the years.
All of them are enjoyable, but none of them have the inventiveness and pure genius that LEGO master Alexis Dos Santos has created.
Looking like something from a particularly inventive Michel Gondry film, this all-LEGO tabletop game based on the podracing sequence is something that we all immediately want in our homes. How the thing works is almost baffling, but the odd system of LEGO conveyor belts and joystick motion looks insanely fun. Take a look at the video below and tell us we're wrong:
Come on, say it with us just this once: Now THAT is podracing!
There is no word yet as to whether this is just a fun experiment or something that may eventually be reproduced and marketed — but regardless of either possibility, it is a wonderful testament to creation and imagination.
Star Wars and LEGO have been wonderful cockpit-fellows for a while now, so let's hope that this is merely the tip of the Loth-wolf's ear of where Santos and other like-minded creators may go. Is a fully working LEGO lightsaber out of the question? How about a dancing LEGO porg, or an exploding LEGO Yarael Poof? It would seem that almost anything (within reason) is possible. The Force is strong with Alexis Dos Santos.
