The most terrifying TV series of last year, The Handmaid's Tale, returns for what is sure to be an equally terrifying season on April 25th. We have our first look at Emily, now in the Colonies, and things don't look good for her.

The Handmaid's Tale - Alexis Bledel as Emily in the colony

Emily has gone through a particularly brutal time in the show. Married with a child to a woman (both of whom escaped to Canada), the "Gender Traitor" was only spared death because she was fertile. She was Ofglen until she was caught having an affair with a Martha. The Martha was killed, but Ofglen/Emily was spared because of her fertility. Instead, she was given a clitoridectomy and reassigned and renamed Ofsteven. Her rebellious streak still intact, she steals a car at the marketplace and kills a Guardian. It doesn't take long for other guards to take her away in an ominous black van.

While Emily's fate was not revealed at the end of the first season of the show, actress Alexis Bledel has confirmed that her character was sent to the colonies - and this photo backs that up. What isn't clear is what Emily's fate may be. The colonies - basically a barren work camp - is usually the last stop for Handmaidens who are too old to get pregnant. But Emily is still fertile, so perhaps she will be able to return to a household. It's not exactly an improvement, but at least she would get a shower every day.

The Handmaid's Tale returns for Season 2 on Hulu on April 25th.
