The Last Jedi will be the longest Star Wars movie ever

Star Wars has always been epic, from massive spaceships to big fight scenes to whole new worlds brought to life on the big screen. The nature of the story, plus the rising runtimes of films over the years, has also tended to mean that the franchise's runtimes get a little high. The first film clocked in at just under two hours, but every film since has topped it, with the longest — Episode II: Attack of the Clones — hitting 142 minutes.

Now, Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi is poised to be the biggest film in the series yet. According to the British Board of Film Classification (the Brits will get to see the film a day before we do), Last Jedi is going to run for about 152 minutes, or just over two-and-a-half hours. It's not clear if that includes credits or not (it probably does), but either way that makes it the longest Star Wars movie ever made, something director Rian Johnson had already hinted at. It's also been rated as "12A" in the United Kingdom, which is roughly the equivalent of our PG-13. No surprise there.

Now, we talk a lot about runtimes and what they might mean to films. There's an argument to be made that movies like The Lord of the Rings have led to this sense of inflation in blockbusters, to the point that films like Transformers: The Last Knight have swelled to a gargantuan and perhaps unnecessary length. We don't know everything Rian Johnson has planned for us with The Last Jedi. There are a lot of plot threads dangling out there, from Rey's first meeting with Luke to Snoke and Kylo Ren to whatever Finn's going to be up to this time out. It's a big movie with a lot of characters, and Johnson's going to introduce even more. As such, The Last Jedi might earn every single second of its runtime, but even if it doesn't, we're in for a long ride. Adjust your bladders accordingly.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theater Dec. 15.
