The return of Stranger Things is now less than a month away, but we still know very little about what we'll see. We've gotten a very thrilling (pun definitely intended) trailer and a few other hints, but the Duffer Brothers are determined to keep us in the dark about most of what's in store. That means the show's marketing materials for Season 2 have leaned very heavily on riffing on other pieces of pop culture. That's included everything from posters inspired by Alien to the latest trailer, which takes its cheeky cue from romantic comedies.
One of the most important and compelling subplots of Season 1 involved the love triangle between Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton). Nancy's very obviously into Steve, but she's also intrigued by and sympathetic to Jonathan's eccentric tendencies. In the end, these intertwining relationships serve as a propellant to get all of them involved in the supernatural adventure at the heart of the show.
But what if that wasn't the case?
That's the premise of Love in the Upside Down, Netflix's latest trailer envisioning what Stranger Things would be like if it was just an '80s romantic comedy in the vein of Say Anything or Pretty in Pink. It is, predictably, very amusing, but it also just makes you want the Season 2 premiere to arrive faster.
Check out the trailer above. Stranger Things returns Oct. 27 on Netflix.
