Wednesday would normally bring an all-new episode of The X-Files. Sadly, the show is on hiatus until Feb. 28, but in the meantime, the good people at Fox have released a new trailer for the next episode, "Rm9sbG93ZXJz," as you can see below.
Here's the official synopsis for the episode, written by Shannon Hamblin and Kristen Cloke, directed by Glen Morgan:
In a world of ever-increasing automation and artificial intelligence, Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) find themselves targets in a deadly game of cat and mouse.
Scenarios in which technology runs amok are nothing new in science fiction; it's not even anything new in The X-Files. But with automation becoming increasingly common, we're not surprised to see its appearance in the new season. It looks like Agents Mulder and Scully are enjoying a lovely sushi dinner, which is bound to send 'shippers into a tizzy. But there are a lot of other text messages and pop-up messages that will leave obsessive X-Philes wondering.
For example, it appears that Scully has a Smart Fridge. It asks her a number of questions, ranging from the mundane ("Salad dressing is low. Buy Caesar again?") to the concerning ("Why celebrate birthdays? Is life so important?") to one that is sure to drive 'shippers bonkers ("Scott's coming for dinner. Defrost chicken?" Who is Scott?!).
That title, "Rm9sbG93ZXJz," is quite a mouthful. It is actually Base64 code, which, basically speaking, is used to encode binary text information so that it can be transferred digitally without changes. If you decode "Rm9sbG93ZXJz," it translates to "Followers." Followers of what? Technology? I guess we will have to wait until the end of February to find out.
But wait! There's more! Fox has also released the titles and loglines for the remaining episodes of this season:
“Familiar,” airing Wednesday, March 7 (8 p.m. ET/PT):
Mulder and Scully investigate the brutal animal attack of a little boy in Connecticut while suspecting darker forces are at play. Episode written by Benjamin Van Allen; Directed by Holly Dale
We've heard rumors on the Twitters that this might be the 'shippiest episode of the season. In a season full of 'ship, we can't even imagine what that would be.
“Nothing Lasts Forever,” airing Wednesday, Mar. 14 (8 p.m. ET/PT)
While investigating human organ theft, Mulder and Scully uncover a mysterious cult consumed with macabre rituals. Episode written by Karen Nielsen; Directed by Jim Wong
This is a terrifying title. However, human organ theft and a mysterious cult are all elements that make for a great episode.
“My Struggle IV,” airing Wednesday, March 21 (8 p.m. ET/PT) — Season Finale
Mulder and Scully rush to find an on-the-run William (guest star Miles Robbins) while the Cigarette Smoking Man (guest star William B. Davis) pushes forward with his ultimate plan. Mitch Pileggi also stars. Annabeth Gish, Joel McHale and Barbara Hershey guest star.
The fourth "My Struggle" episode. Hopefully, it will finally answer the questions of WTF was going on in those episodes, and maybe give us a little closure. Not terribly likely, but X-Philes should be excited if there is a legit family reunion.
What are you looking forward to for the rest of the season? Let us know in the comments!
