What kind of a magician are you if you suddenly lose your magic? That’s the kind of the daring trick that SYFY’s The Magicians is trying to pull off as they head into Season 3 next year. And you can imagine what kind of a difficult situation that puts the actors in who are playing those magicians.
At San Diego Comic-Con, we got a chance to find out what that’s like, as stars Hale Appleman (Eliot), Summer Bishil (Margo), and Arjun Gupta (Penny) all sat down with us in our SYFY WIRE studio. Surprisingly, Gupta is all for the writer’s risky magic-thwarting ways: "It’s putting these characters in such new and uncomfortable situations, and being completely emotionally immature human beings -- our characters -- that’s a fun thing to watch."
Alas, not everyone agrees with that assessment, particularly Bishil, who thinks Margo is "incredibly" emotionally evolved. After laying out why that is, we were led to wonder when Margo is going to finally step out and become the main villain on the show -- a prospect Bishil is totally "priming" for. Fortunately, she’s got Eliot to keep holding her back from breaking bad altogether.
But as we hint at in the video below (and in our other chat with co-stars Stella Maeve, Jason Ralph, and Olivia Dudley), what will happen when they have to operate more independently in Season 3? We shall see when The Magicians returns in 2018.
