The Magicians are bringing their sexy blend of spellslinging back to TV soon, which means the fan-centric circuit is in full swing. The SYFY show has been a delightfully bonkers and queer-as-hell treat over its four seasons, and now, with a fifth on the horizon, it's headed back to San Diego Comic-Con with a ton of crew in tow
SYFY WIRE attended the show's panel, which featured stars Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy, Jade Tailor, Brittany Curran, and Trevor Einhorn speaking alongside executive producers Sera Gamble, John McNamara, and Henry Alonso Myers. What better way for this massive panel to prepare us for Season 5 by announcing even more people that will be involved with the coming episodes? That's right, we've got guest stars.
Sean McGuire and American Gods' Yetide Badaki will be joining the fan-favorite regulars. We also got a clip from the Season 5 premiere: a terrible pig man that looks like Ben Franklin won't give Julia a quest to stop the apocalypse. She obviously doesn't listen to this literal sexist pig (McGuire) and takes on the quest for herself over the course of the upcoming season. There will also be a musical episode, later in the season — which is quite plot-intensive.
These announcements came after the cast screened a video thanking the fandom (and commenting on some of the more NSFW fan art out there) for getting them through four full seasons and onto a fifth. The cast focused on much of the fourth season's fun (like the library jail and the cockroach within) and female empowerment (like everything in the show) — and the fallout from last season's finale. McNamara explained that "they're grieving, real grieving, not in a TV way." McNamara and Gamble both lost their fathers in their twenties, which inspired the loss of Quentin in the show. The pair wanted to deal with "ultimate realities," McNamara said, which certainly doesn't bode well for the character's return.
The Magicians begin its fifth season in 2020.
