The Mandalorian: Jon Favreau's new live action Star Wars show sounds like a Western set in the outer rim

One of the biggest draws of Disney's upcoming streaming service, Disney Play, is the promise of all that Star Wars related content. One of the biggest names attached is The Jungle Book director Jon Favreau, who previously announced he'd write and produce an original Star Wars series exclusive to the platform.

Earlier tonight, Favreau, who voiced Rio Durante in this summer's Solo: A Star Wars Storytook to Instagram to introduce his upcoming series, The Mandalorian, to the world.

The title refers to a cultural group, known throughout the galaxy as skilled warriors who could hold their own against the Jedi. By the time the prequel trilogy rolled around, they'd transitioned into a mostly pacifist society.

Mandalorian armor, however, remained a fearsome sight across the galaxy, and the bounty hunter Jango Fett wore it specifically to capitalize on its deadly reputation. Later on, his son (okay, unaltered clone) Boba Fett sported a modified version of the same outfit, though neither Fett was technically a Mandalorian themselves.

Beyond a title that digs deep into Star Wars lore, the idea of a "lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy" sounds like it'll be leaning heavy into a space western aesthetic, one of the many genres that influenced George Lucas' original vision.

No other details are known at this point, save for the hefty $10 million an episode price tag, but setting it between the classic and sequel trilogy allows it to fill in some of the narrative gaps. At the same time, having it take place in the outer rim frees it up to tell self-contained stories within the larger Star Wars universe. Not to mention maybe creating a new character that actually gets to live up to Boba Fett's reputation.

No word yet on when we can expect to see the series hit Disney Play, which is expected to launch sometime in late 2019. In the meantime, let us know what your hoping to see in The Mandalorian?
