Less than two years after its debut, the portable (not to mention maleable) product is now the fastest-selling console "of this hardware generation" in the United States, the company announced today. Since the Switch launched in March of 2017, 8.7 million units have been sold.
In addition, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (a Switch-exclusive title) is the fastest-selling game for the console, despite the game only going on sale a little over a week ago. It is also the fastest-selling game in the entire Super Smash Bros. franchise, which will celebrate its 20th birthday in the new year.
“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”
The combined sales of the Switch and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate helped Nintendo to become the top selling video game company of 2018 and the momentum probably won't wear off anytime soon, thanks to a slew of upcoming titles on the horizon. True Nintendo connoisseurs will no doubt be excited for the release of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Metroid 4, Yoshi's Crafted World, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Animal Crossing Switch.
