The first manned mission to Mars will be one of the greatest achievements in human history, but in the Hulu original series The First, the journey to liftoff might be more perilous than the space flight itself.
The first teaser for the new sci-fi drama from creator Beau Willimon (House of Cards) arrived last month, and while it certainly hinted at challenges ahead, it also focused on a sense of hope, beauty, and ambition. It showed us a vision of the journey to Mars as a massive feat of human pioneerism, and it got us excited. The first official trailer for the series finally arrived Tuesday, and while the ambition and hope is still there, it's also very clear that the path to Mars is paved with one great challenge after another.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think:
The First follows an ensemble cast that includes a reluctant astronaut (Sean Penn), an optimistic program leader (Natasha McElhone) and a whole host of scientists, fellow astronauts, and family members along for the ride as the space program attempts what's never been done before. If they succeed, they will be the first humans to successfully make the journey to Mars, land on the planet, and perhaps even encounter life there. Before they can do that, though, they have to give their lives over to a program that may or may not work, and in the process give themselves over to something bigger than they are at the expense of their families, and possibly their lives.
The trailer brilliantly balances the high stakes of a Mars mission with the power of a family drama, revealing in each frame how the people involved must sacrifice and make hard choices on the path to doing (or not doing) something great. It also showcases the amazing cast, which in addition to Penn and McElhone also includes LisaGay Hamilton, Hannah Ware, Keiko Agena, Rey Lucas, James Ransone, Anna Jacoby-Heron, Brian Lee Franklin and Oded Fehr.
All eight episode of The First will be available to stream on Hulu beginning September 14. Will you be watching?
