Back in April, we reported that Lionsgate had picked up the novel The Punch Escrow for development. Now we're finding out that development is moving along swiftly, with a director and producers joining the production.
Signed on to direct is James Bobin (shown above, the one on the left), who recently helmed Alice Through the Looking Glass, The Muppets, and The Muppets Most Wanted. He also created the cult TV series Flight of the Conchords.
David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman will be producing under their Mandeville Films banner. The producing duo worked with Bobin on The Muppets, and recently saw their live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast pass the $1 billion mark. In the genre space, the pair have produced The Divergent Series, Warm Bodies, and Surrogates.
The Punch Escrow, written by Tal M. Klein, follows an A.I. tech, Joel, who is accidentally duplicated while transporting. He must then "outsmart the shadowy organization that controls teleportation, outrun the religious sect out to destroy it, and find a way to get back to the woman he loves in a world that now has two of him."
“Tal has crafted such a uniquely vivid world that compels us to ask critical questions of our own about our relationship with technology,” Lieberman said Thursday in a statement. “And he does it with such ease, accessibility, and humor that you leave the read feeling educated, emotionally moved and highly entertained all at the same time.”
No production schedule has been announced as of yet, but we'll be following along closely. Anyone read the book yet? Any early dream casting ideas?
