Over on the televised side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are as many factions as there are places to stream them. Hulu staked its MCU TV flag in the ground last year with Marvel's Runaways, and the show will soon return for Season 2.
As part of New York Comic Con 2018, the head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, held a panel that was supposed to just be a peek at the second season, complete with a visit from the cast, and things really did seem to start out that way. Loeb took the NYCC stage and brought out Rhenzy Feliz (Alex), Lyrica Okano (Nico), Virginia Gardner (Carolina), Ariela Barer (Gert), Gregg Sulkin (Chase), and Allegra Acosta (Molly), along with co-showrunner Stephanie Savage. Things started as a simple Q&A, as the cast each related what they thought their characters are going through as Season 2 begins right where Season 1 left off.
“He’s a boy in the first season…throughout the second season we’ll see him try to become a man," Sulkin said of Chase. “Also he’s in a beautiful relationship with Gert…I think, once they live with each other, it’s great for the journey of the show, great for the journey of the characters.”
Speaking of relationships, Gardner also opened up a bit about Carolina, and her character's own opening up with Nico.
“Carolina and Niko really explore their relationship," she said. "Carolina is flying a lot more this season, she’s rainbow a lot more this season."
After this brief discussion, and promises of a bigger and better Season 2, Loeb declared that there was no new footage to reveal aside from the trailers we've already seen. The cast playfully pleaded with him to say that wasn't true, and that's when Loeb revealed that the audience would get to see the entire Season 2 premiere. Here's what we saw.
Without any spoilers, the premiere episode is very promising, and has us exicted for the new season. It's a little heavier on drama and comedic moments than action, but what action there is will have you excited. It adds to the lore, and all the while new relationships are developing...with others starting to break down. More than anything else, the episode sets up the new nomal of the show — it's establishing what we can expect, but also pushes out heroes (and their powers) along little by little. Also, the show has a dinosaur now, so there's that.
if we had to choose, we'd say that Acosta's Molly owned the episode. A small moment between Molly and Gert got the biggest response in the room, though it was just a clever grace note. It was full of character, however, as is the entire series.
Will the show ever tie into Cloak and Dagger? Loeb said to tune in on the 21st. As to whether it would tie into the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Loeb gave a firm, smiling "no." Nobody's gonna go blowing off into the wind on this show. They additionally showed an exclusive "this season on" trailer, and let's just say that it looks like the emotion will only get more intense. It also looks like the team is going to be having something of a mole hunt, which Savage confirmed on the panel.
Marvel's Runaways will live to run another season December 21, with all episodes arriving at once, on Hulu.
