The flagship intergalactic team of the Marvel Universe is getting a major shakeup in the wake of the All New, All Different relaunch — and here’s our first look at the revamped roster in action.
Marvel has dropped several variant covers and some preview pages from Guardians of the Galaxy No. 1, which is being retooled with a new first issue (along with dozens of other comics) in the wake of Secret Wars. Stalwarts Groot, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Venom and are being joined by Fantastic Four alum Ben Grimm (aka the Thing) and Peter Quill’s (former?) lady love Kitty Pryde (now known as Star-Lady). Even better? Rocket’s in charge. This should be fun.
It’s encouraging to see the opening pages focus in on Ben Grimm, and he should make for a fascinating addition to the roster. It’s easy to forget he originally trained as a pilot, long before he was turned into the Thing and the clock ticked to clobberin’ time. It’s just a brief preview, but he seems to be right at home in the outskirts of the universe.
Though its technically a relaunch, the new run will pick up on some story threads left over from the pre-Secret Wars era — namely Peter Quill’s election as the new ruler of the Spartax Empire. Which, you know, explains why he’s not out swashbuckling with the rest of the gang.
The comic is being written by Marvel heavy hitter Brian Michael Bendis, with art by Valerio Schiti. The first issue is slated to hit shelves Oct. 14.
