With the return of all-new episodes of The Walking Dead now only a month away, AMC is sharing a load of new information about the setup for the upcoming Season 9, as well as an all-new poster alongside a ton of new character images.

Set a year and a half beyond the fallout of Rick Grimes’ fateful choice to do the humane thing and keep his chief antagonist, Saviors leader Negan, from a well-earned death, Season 9 promises to show the ripple effects of Grimes’ defining moment on the rest of the survivors, even as they pause to rebuild what’s been lost.

AMC’s synopsis suggests the survivors may end up facing a new kind of enemy — their own internal tension, thanks to Rick’s polarizing choice to spare Negan — while they work together to tame nature and stake out a more civilized life.

“Rick upheld the values his late son, Carl, championed in order to build for the future, but created conflict within his group,” AMC teased.

“Now, we see our survivors a year and a half after the end of the war, rebuilding civilization under Rick’s steadfast leadership. It is a time of relative peace among the communities as they work together, looking to the past to forge the future, but the world they knew is rapidly changing as man-made structures continue to degrade, and nature takes over, changing the landscape and creating new challenges for our survivors.”

By carving new narrative territory even as it iterates on the inspiration it’s always drawn from Robert Kirkman’s comics, TWD has continued to dominate Sunday nights even as it moves beyond its eighth season. Season 9 of AMC”s flagship series is just around the corner: The Walking Dead returns starting Sunday, Oct. 7 at 9 p.m. ET.
