The Walking Dead may have bid farewell to Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes on last night's Season 9 episode, but it wasn't the only character you won't be seeing from here on out. According to showrunner Angela Kang, Lauren Cohan's Maggie Greene has also wrapped up her character arc — at least for the time being.
"That's the last of her for this season," Kang told The Hollywood Reporter. "I would hope it's not the last you'll see of her for the show, but she is not in any immediately forthcoming episodes."
This shouldn't come as a total shock to those who have been in the know. Over the last year or so, reports broke that Cohan was looking to leave the AMC zombie series in favor of other, diversified projects like ABC's Whiskey Cavalier spy series. In the end, Cohan agreed to return for Season 9, albeit for a fraction of the episodes.
Titled "What Comes After," last night's episode found Maggie giving up her ambition of killing Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who murdered her husband and the father of her child, Glenn (Steven Yeun). When the opportunity to take Negan's life finally presents itself, Maggie comes to the realization that life in prison is a much more agonizing fate for the erstwhile leader of the Saviors than a swift death.
But as Kang said, we will hopefully see more of Maggie in the future. Even if it's not on the show, a movie about her character could be in the cards.
"That is absolutely a possibility," said Walking Dead producer and chief content officer Scott Gimple during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I will say that Angela and I and others really want to see Maggie back on the show. We have a lot of story for her that we want to tackle, and we’ve talked about different ways we can do it. That said, if Whiskey Cavalier lights up the world, we’re still going to do Maggie stuff. We’re just going to figure out different ways to do it. It might be me shooting Lauren in between scenes of Whiskey Cavalier, of Maggie in a post-apocalyptic Prague [where Whiskey Cavalier is filming]."
A Maggie Greene movie isn't so far-fetched an idea, as it was announced yesterday that Lincoln will star as Grimes in at least three Walking Dead movies.
