One of the things AMC's The Walking Dead loves to do is use its
zombies walkers to pay homage to various cinema horror classics (like this Hellraiser-inspired walker). Over a week ago, one of those tributes featured a very cool reference to RoboCop. Not a horror classic per se, but it's a fitting homage nevertheless.
Walking Dead director and makeup artist extraordinaire Greg Nicotero took to Instagram to reveal that the second episode of the season, titled “The Damned” (which aired on Oct. 29), featured an homage to Clarence Boddicker’s (Kurtwood Smith) henchman, Emil Antonowsky (Paul McCrane).
In the original 1987 Paul Verhoeven movie (not the remake), Emil smashes his delivery truck into a huge vat of toxic waste while trying to kill Murphy (Peter Weller) and emerges with his skin melted off by the chemicals. The poor guy shambles off before stepping in front of Boddicker’s oncoming car and exploding on impact. You can watch the whole thing starting around the 1:56 mark:
Ewww. Yeah, it’s a pretty gross scene, and Nicotero’s team re-created toxic-waste Emil for The Walking Dead. Nicotero shared a behind-the-scenes look at the shuffling zombie with the caption: “Robocop 'Emil' tribute walker from last weeks episode honoring the amazing work of Rob Bottin.” Have a look:
Did you guys spot The Walking Dead’s gruesome RoboCop tribute?
