“This land. There’s something wrong with it. It plays tricks on your mind.”
In the creepy new trailer for the horror-western genre mashup The Wind, Caitlin Gerard (Insidious: The Last Key) plays Lizzy Macklin, a gun-wielding woman fighting off... something... while trying to live off the land. Per Deadline, which first revealed the trailer, Lizzy, who lives in a cabin on frontier land in the late 1800s, is slowly going insane, thanks in no small part to isolation, new neighbors, wolves, and the eponymous wind, which doesn’t appear to be just a run-of-the-mill breeze.
As Lizzy says in response to someone suggesting she’s no longer “a God-fearing woman”: “I don’t suspect God has much business out here.” She may very well be right.
The trailer also features ravenous wolves, unseen intruders, mutilated livestock, and a montage of whole a lot of people screaming. Give it a look:
Based on the trailer, The Wind seems to have a bit of a The Burrowers-meets-The Witch-meets-A Quiet Place vibe to it.
The film is written by Teresa Sutherland and marks the directorial debut of Emma Tami. In addition to Gerard, it also stars Ashley Zukerman and Julia Goldani.
The Wind is set to premiere on Sept. 10 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
