In honor of the upcoming 25th anniversary of The X-Files, Mattel is releasing a pair of Agent Mulder and Scully Barbie dolls. Yes, really.

This may seem like a strange marketing decision, but it is not without precedent. In 1998, Mattel released a pair of Barbie and Ken dolls dressed up as Agents Scully and Mulder, in order to promote the first feature film, The X-Files: Fight the Future.

That first set of dolls was pretty much just Barbie and Ken in suits with FBI badges. As you can see in the gallery below, these new dolls are sculpted to resemble actors Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny from the original 1990s run of the series.

To celebrate the upcoming anniversary, 20th Century Fox is planning the ultimate trivia contest, with the Agents Mulder and Scully Barbie dolls as prizes. From now until Sept. 6, fans are encouraged to submit trivia questions (and answers) about the show. Then, on Sept. 10, the 25th anniversary of the premiere of The X-Files, the trivia contest will open, and run through Sept. 17. Contestants who answer the most questions correctly will automatically be entered in a drawing to win a The X-Files 25th anniversary prize pack, which will include the two Barbie dolls.

Fox is also releasing a number of new 25th anniversary products for purchase, including a poster, T-shirt, enamel pin, and transforming mug. In addition, a number of other partners will be releasing new goodies. IDW will release an anniversary comic book, The X-Files: Case Files. Loot Crate will include X-Files related items in their September box, including an exclusive X-Files Dimensional Poster. Upper Deck is releasing the new Legendary Encounters: The X-Files deck building game, which you can play as Mulder, Scully, Skinner, Reyes, or Doggett. And there's also an X-Files marathon running for five solid days on BBC America.

Check out some of the 25th anniversary goodies in the gallery below, then let us know in the comments if you think Mulder makes a good Ken Doll.
