Fox’s surprise hit The Gifted has made an art of living in the gray area of the X-Men’s world, but things look to get a whole lot clearer in the season finale next week.
The show wraps up its 13-episode run next Monday with a two-hour finale framed around the episodes “eXtraction” and “X-roads” (gotta love those X-pun titles), which look to bring the X-Men (or at least something they left behind) back into the forefront of the series. The back half of the season has focused on the mutant underground’s battle with Sentinel Services and a shady program to experiment on mutants to turn them into weapons, and the finale looks to bring that battle to a head.
Just in the past few weeks the series has introduced staples of the X-Men comics, from the Stepford Cuckoos to some references to the Hellfire Club and Magneto’s legacy. The tease for the season finale hints at some type of tool or weapon left behind by the missing X-Men, and we also see Polaris tapping into a power set that should look familiar for those who have seen her MIA father Magneto in action.

It might not be the most obvious pick, but The Gifted has quietly become one of the most exciting and poignant Marvel shows on television. It does an excellent job of balancing the network drama prerequisites of a prime-time show with a family drama and a slow roll of comic book references that are only getting deeper.
The Gifted finale airs Monday, January 15, on Fox.
