With this summer's grand experiment in intellectual stimulation, Battleship, crashing into theaters in a matter of hours—and one of its stars being the chart-topping musician Rihanna—we figured it was a good time to see how rock stars fared in sci-fi offerings. Here's the good, the bad and the very ugly.
There's been great work done by musicians in non-genre films, of course—Frank Sinatra, Cher and Jennifer Hudson all have the Oscars to prove it. And there are one or two people we left off of this list because we felt they didn't quite qualify: Meat Loaf, for example, got his big on-screen break in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but appearing in a musical didn't seem like that much of a stretch.
So here are the best and worst the music biz has to offer.
