While in China to promote his upcoming period drama The Flowers of War, Christian Bale took it upon himself to try and visit a political detainee—a blind lawyer who stood up against the government's abusive family-planning practices—and was beaten for his trouble.

According to CNN, who sent a trio of journalists along with Bale, when the actor approached the house of Chen Guangcheng—who is confined to his home, along with his family, by round-the-clock government "security"—he was met by dozens of guards who peppered Bale with punches in an attempt to stop him from both gaining access and filming the event.

It remains unclear if the "Batman voice" would've helped the situation.
