The first full trailer for Zack Snyder's femme-forward action flick Sucker Punch just broke on the Internets—and it's so full of startling imagery, pulsing beats and things that explode real good that we wouldn't be surprised if it broke the Internets, too.
We're finally getting a sense of what Snyder's action fantasia is all about: Babydoll (Emily Browning) is a victimized girl confined to a mental institution who, rather than face the reality of her harsh situation, retreats into a series of delusional worlds. In those worlds, she thinks she can find the key to her real-world salvation—and shoot/slice/explode almost everything that gets in her way. And a quartet of girls—Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Rocket (Jena Malone)—share Babydoll's pain and get her back.
Sucker Punch looks terrific—it feels like a genetic splice of anime like Dirty Pair with grindhouse exploitation like Caged Heat. But there's one thing worth remembering: Snyder can cut a hell of a trailer. Both Watchmen and 300 had dazzling spots that, depending on how you felt about the finished products, either whet the appetite for awesome or set you up for disappointment.
Only time will tell which way Sucker Punch swings.
